An insurance program, sponsored by your state, is available to working employees who unfortunately suffer illnesses or job-related injuries. In New York, including Brooklyn, employers pay for this insurance, and do not require the employee to contribute to the cost of compensation.
If you are injured, then workers’ compensation could require you to have diagnostic tests. These include x-ray examinations, MRI’s, otherwise known as magnetic resonance imaging or other examinations or tests. Many injured workers need orthopedic treatment, pain management and/or physical therapy as well.
As of March 2007, insurance carriers are authorized to contract with legal and proper diagnostic networks for testing. These tests include, but are not limited to, x-ray examinations, other diagnostic tests, the previously mentioned magnetic resonance imaging, and other radiological tests or examinations. These insurance carriers also include the State Insurance Fund and self-insured employers as well.
Workers’ comp even covers long term problems like repetitive stress injuries or chronic back problems. However, workers’ compensation coverage will not cover injuries that occur if an employee is using illegal drugs or is intoxicated.
How can I choose a medical practice or a doctor?
Because so many work-related injuries involve bones or soft tissue, workers’ comp covers diagnosis and treatment from an orthopedic doctor when you’ve been hurt at work.
You have the right to select the doctor of your choice as long as they are authorized by the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board (NYS WCB Authorized Medical Provider). Your employer might recommend a doctor or practice, but you should be aware that in New York you have the freedom to choose your doctor.
And in New York, you can also change your doctor; if you aren’t receiving satisfactory treatment, or if changing doctors will benefit you in some way or if your doctor is NOT authorized by the Workers’ Compensation Board.

Choosing an Orthopedic Doctor
Understanding the various types of doctors that are available to you; especially in the orthopedics field, is important.
General orthopedists will treat all orthopedic conditions. Other orthopedists have specializations with foot injuries, spinal injuries, and/or hand injuries, Many orthopedists specialize in surgery when/if that becomes a recommended treatment plan.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Once you find an orthopedic doctor, you will undergo diagnosis and then begin treatment. You might begin with an MRI, an X-ray, or another test to diagnose your issue. Once your doctor looks over the results, he or she will start a treatment plan. Your orthopedist can prescribe medications and injections to ease pain and improve mobility.
You might be surprised by all the treatments available when you visit an orthopedic doctor at Metro Healthcare Partners’ office in Brooklyn.
Your orthopedic doctor can also refer you for physical therapy, chiropractic care, or recommend surgery to treat your injury. You will always be an active part of the treatment plan, and our doctors always listen to the patients’ concerns and needs.
